申命記：子供達に残す物語がありますか？

 私達はこれまでモーセが記した「モーセ五書」のうち創世記、出エジプト記、レビ記、民数記を見てまいりました。そして、今日はその五書の最後となります申命記をみていきたいと願っております。

 これまでの四つの書を見ます時に、イスラエルの民が歩んできた道のりには、プロセスがあったのだということが分かります。すなわち、神がアブラハムと結ばれた契約、そして、その子孫のエジプトでの奴隷生活、そこから逃れて荒野で律法を受け、神が臨在する幕屋を建てたということ。イスラエルの民が他の民族と区別され、聖なる民として生きるために生活に密着した諸々の具体的な律法・・・。これらは彼らが通らなければならないものであり、その順番も何でもいいというわけではなく、一つ一つの背後には人の歴史を舞台にはたらかれる神の御手を感じます。

そして、この申命記はイスラエルの民が次のステージへと移行していく橋渡しの書となっているのです。すなわち、エジプトを脱出し、荒野での４０年の放浪生活が終わりに近づき、彼らはこれからいよいよカナンという地に入り、定住するという、その大きな変化を前にモーセがイスラエルの民に語ったのがこの申命記であり、そのモーセが何を語ったかというポイントを今日は皆さんと共にみていきたいと願っています。

そのために、まず最初にこの申命記と後に続く書、それのみならず聖書全体を理解するために、とても大切な「ある土地」について説明しておきましょう。それは先ほど触れました、これからイスラエルの民が入っていこうとする「カナン」という土地です。聖書の中でこの地は彼らに「約束の地」とされ、それは「乳と密の流れる地」と呼ばれています。そして、その地域は今日の地中海とヨルダン川、死海に挟まれた地域一帯を表わします。

地図を見れば一目瞭然、その土地は猫の額ほどしかなく、ブラジルやオーストラリアに行けば、個人でこれぐらいの農地をもっている人はいくらでもいるだろうというような土地です。しかし、この地こそ、今日でもイスラエルとパレスチナ問題の中心であり、世界中が注視している場所なのです。なぜでしょうか。その理由は創世記１２章までさかのぼります。

1時に主はアブラムに言われた、「あなたは国を出て、親族に別れ、父の家を離れ、わたしが示す地に行きなさい。2わたしはあなたを大いなる国民とし、あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を大きくしよう。あなたは祝福の基となるであろう。3あなたを祝福する者をわたしは祝福し、あなたをのろう者をわたしはのろう。地のすべてのやからは、あなたによって祝福される」。4アブラムは主が言われたようにいで立った。ロトも彼と共に行った。アブラムはハランを出たとき七十五歳であった。5アブラムは妻サライと、弟の子ロトと、集めたすべての財産と、ハランで獲た人々とを携えてカナンに行こうとしてい� �立ち、カナンの地にきた。6アブラムはその地を通ってシケムの所、モレのテレビンの木のもとに着いた。そのころカナンびとがその地にいた。7時に主はアブラムに現れて言われた、「わたしはあなたの子孫にこの地を与えます」。アブラムは彼に現れた主のために、そこに祭壇を築いた。 

このカナンの地は神様が彼らの先祖、アブラハムに約束された土地なのです。さらに、まだイスラエルの民がエジプトで奴隷となっていた時に、モーセにも神はこう語られたのです。出エジプト記３章７節－８節に記されているとおりです。

7「わたしは、エジプトにいるわたしの民の悩みを、つぶさに見、また追い使う者のゆえに彼らの叫ぶのを聞いた。わたしは彼らの苦しみを知っている。8わたしは下って、彼らをエジプトびとの手から救い出し、これをかの地から導き上って、良い広い地、乳と蜜の流れる地、すなわちカナンびと、ヘテびと、アモリびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとのおる所に至らせようとしている。 

この言葉を受けた時から、モーセの人生をかけた使命はエジプトからイスラエルの民を救い出し、彼らをこの乳と密の流れるカナンに連れて行くということになったのです。先週、お話ししましたモーセが１２人を偵察に送りましたその先もこのカナンだったのです。

私達にとって「土地」とは、来年、ここにショッピングセンターができるから土地を売ってくれないかとか、これから埋め立てするこの土地に建つマンションを売り出しますというようなものです。しかし、ユダヤ人をはじめ、聖書の中に生きた先祖をもつ者達にとって、彼らの土地問題とは、昨日今日のことではなく、この旧約聖書にまでさかのぼることであり、しかも、それは神に示された土地なのです。なぜにあの狭い地域で領土の問題が今もあれだけ取り上げられ、火種となっているのか、その理由はここにあります。

そして、このカナンの地ですが、先週お話ししましたように、そこに偵察に行った者たち、およびその報告を聞いた民達の不信仰ゆえに、後４０年もの間、イスラエルの民は荒野を放浪することになり、ヨシュアとカレブ、そして若い世代の者達を除いては、さらにモーセ自身もその不信仰により、約束の地、カナンに入ることができなくなったと聖書は記しています。ですから、この申命記の最後はモーセがエリコの向かいにあるピスガの頂からこのカナンを見渡すというところで終っているのです。彼はそれを見ますが、そこに入ることなく死んだのです。

国の救世主は何世紀ですか？

このような現実に私達は厳粛な気持ちにさせられます。最大の功労者モーセもイスラエルの民もその不信仰ゆえに、彼らの最終的な目的地に入ることが許されませんでした。私達はこのことを心のどこかに刻まなければなりません。特にモーセにとって、このことを受け入れることはとても難しかったと思います。彼はその日のために毎日を一生懸命に生きてきたのですから。

 しかし、彼はどこかでそのことをも受け止めたのでしょう。彼はあくまで神が彼に与えた使命を最後まで全うすることに力を注ぎました。彼は最後に何に力を注いだのでしょうか。そうです、カレブとヨシュアを除いては、出エジプトや荒野での生活を知らない新しい世代に向かって、モーセは自分たちと神様との関係を彼らに知らせるべく、過去を回顧し、同時に、それまでは荒野を放浪していましたが、これからはカナンに入りそこでの定住生活が新しく始まるために必要な戒めと展望について、この申命記において語っているのです。

 このような大切な転換期にモーセはどのようなことを具体的にイスラエルの民に語ったのでしょうか。申命記６章２０節‐２４節を読んでみましょう。

 20後の日となって、あなたの子があなたに問うて言うであろう、『われわれの神、主があなたがたに命じられたこのあかしと、定めと、おきてとは、なんのためですか』。21その時あなたはその子に言わなければならない。『われわれはエジプトでパロの奴隷であったが、主は強い手をもって、われわれをエジプトから導き出された。22主はわれわれの目の前で、大きな恐ろしいしるしと不思議とをエジプトと、パロとその全家とに示され、23われわれをそこから導き出し、かつてわれわれの先祖に誓われた地にはいらせ、それをわれわれに賜わった。

24そして主はこのすべての定めを行えと、われわれに命じられた。これはわれわれの神、主を恐れて、われわれが、つねにさいわいであり、また今日のように、主がわれわれを守って命を保たせるためである。25もしわれわれが、命じられたとおりに、このすべての命令をわれわれの神、主の前に守って行うならば、それはわれわれの義となるであろう』。

 彼が何よりもイスラエルの民に伝えたかったことは、これまでの自分達と先祖達が神と共にどんな歩みをしてきたかということ、私達の歴史を舞台としてはたらかれた神様の足跡、すなわち「神の物語」を回顧することだったのです。そして、お気づきになっているかと思うのですが、私達が毎週の礼拝や各集会で聖書を開いて話していることも、まさしく神様が人に何をなさったかという、その物語を私達は互いに聞いているのです。

 車には色々な付属品があります。その中にはＤＶＤやナビゲーションというようなオプションとして車体につけるものがあります。なぜ、オプションなのかというと、別についていなくても車は運転できるからです。しかし、私達はいまだかって「今ならタイヤが四つついてきます」とか、「期間中はハンドルがついてきます」というような車に出会ったことはありません。これらがなければ車は運転できませんから。また、それがなくても運転はできますが、「今ならサイドミラーとバックミラーをつけておきます」というようなディーラもいません。

 想像してみてください。バックミラーもサイドミラーもない車で片側、六車線のフリーウェイを運転することはなかなかスリリングなことです。これらのミラーによって今、通り過ぎてきた後ろを見て運転しなければ、私達は前に進むことに困難を覚えます。同じようにイスラエルの民達は過去に神様がどんなことを自分達に、先祖達にしてくださったかということを知ることによって、前に進んだのです。

 ですから、この申命記でモーセは実に１８回も出エジプトの経験を忘れてはならないと触れ、この後にモーセの後を継いだヨシュアの最後の説教も（ヨシュア記２４章）、神がイスラエルに何をなしてくださったかということであり、バビロン捕囚から帰還した時にエズラが語った言葉も（ネヘミヤ9章）、ステパノの弁明も（使徒行伝７章）全て、イスラエルがどのようなところを歩んできて、彼らに対して神様はどうあられたかということが語られているのです。彼らは過去を振り返り、それを力として明日を生きる民なのです。

 そして、それは現在も全く変わらないのです。今でもエルサレムの嘆きの壁などに行くとこのようなユダヤ人を見かけます。彼らはその頭にヒラクティリー(Tefillin) というものをつけ、その手に黒いヒモを巻いています。これは彼らがエジプトを脱出させた神のことを思い起こすものであり、その彼らの出で立ちは以下のような聖書の言葉を文字通り守っていることによるのです。

 8その日、あなたの子に告げて言いなさい、『これはわたしがエジプトから出るときに、主がわたしになされたことのためである』。9そして、これを、手につけて、しるしとし、目の間に置いて記念とし、主の律法をあなたの口に置かなければならない。主が強い手をもって、あなたをエジプトから導き出されるからである。10それゆえ、あなたはこの定めを年々その季節に守らなければならない。出エジプト記１３章８節‐１０節

 私達はこのような光景を見ますと「何もそこまでしなくても」と思います。しかし、彼らにとって、神様が自分たちの祖先になされたことは決して忘れてはならないものであり、その先祖の歴史を顧みることなくして、今も過酷な状況に置かれているイスラエルは、明日を展望することができないのです。

神は目をしていない

 今日、信仰者ではない世の学者達ですら、現代人の悲しみは、その語り継ぐべき物語がないことなのだと言っています。皆さん、私はこのメッセージを準備していて本当に神様に感謝しました。私はユダヤ人ではありませんが、神の子として、このイスラエルの民になされた神の物語を受けついで、その物語に聞き明日と向き合い、その物語を確信もって後世に残すことができるからです。そして、私のみならず、それは皆さん一人一人にも与えられている驚くべき特権なのです。

 申命記１１章１８節‐２８節はこう記しています。

 18それゆえ、これらのわたしの言葉を心と魂におさめ、またそれを手につけて、しるしとし、目の間に置いて覚えとし、19これを子供たちに教え、家に座している時も、道を歩く時も、寝る時も、起きる時も、それについて語り、20また家の入口の柱と、門にそれを書きしるさなければならない。21そうすれば、主が先祖たちに与えようと誓われた地に、あなたがたの住む日数およびあなたがたの子供たちの住む日数は、天が地をおおう日数のように多いであろう。22もしわたしがあなたがたに命じるこのすべての命令をよく守って行い、あなたがたの神、主を愛し、そのすべての道に歩み、主につき従うならば、23主はこの国々の民を皆、あなたがたの前から追い払われ、あなたがたはあなたがたよりも大きく、かつ強い国々を取るに至るであろう。24あなたがたが足の裏で踏む所は皆、あなたがたのものとなり、あなたがたの領域は荒野からレバノンに及び、また大川ユフラテから西の海に及ぶであろう。25だれもあなたがたに立ち向かうことのできる者はないであろう。あなたがたの神、主は、かつて言われたように、あなたがたの踏み入る地の人々が、あなたがたを恐れおののくようにされるであろう。26見よ、わたしは、きょう、あなたがたの前に祝福と、のろいとを置く。27もし、きょう、わたしがあなたがたに命じるあな たがたの神、主の命令に聞き従うならば、祝福を受けるであろう。28もしあなたがたの神、主の命令に聞き従わず、わたしが、きょう、あなたがたに命じる道を離れ、あなたがたの知らなかった他の神々に従うならば、のろいを受けるであろう。

 皆さん、この申命記以降、イスラエルの民はこの申命記に記されている言葉に自らを照らし合わせて生きていきます。イエス・キリストもこの申命記から一番、多くの言葉を引用し、自らもその言葉に生きました。まさしく、この申命記がイスラエル民族が生きるガイドラインとなっていくのです。しかしながら、民はここに記されている「祝福」ではなく「のろい」を度々選び、まさしく目をあてることのできない悲惨なところを通ります。彼らが自らの国を滅ぼし、最後に離散の民となり、全世界に散っていくということは今日の私達も知っているとおりです。

 しかし、神はあわれみと恵みに富んだ神です。そのイスラエルの民に再度、国を与え彼らは今日にいたっているのです。しかしながら、彼らは今日もその近隣諸国からの攻撃にさらされます。今のイラン、エジプト、シリア等で起きているきな臭い情勢は直接、この小さな国、イスラエルに降りかかるようなことです。まさしく周囲全て、敵に包囲されているというのが彼らが今、置かれている状況です。しかし、そんな彼らはやはり今も変わらずに、この申命記の言葉に自らの拠り所を得ているのです。

 「わたしはあなたの前にのろいと祝福を置く」（申命記１１章２６節）と言われた神様の言葉は、私達の前に二つのコップがあることをイメージさせます。そのどちらを飲むかは全て私達の自由。どちらを飲むか迷い、躊躇する時に、かつて神がイスラエルの民になしたことを私達も思い起こすのです。彼らから見れば私達は異邦人ですが、私達もこのイスラエル民族を通して人の歴史に刻印を残された神の物語をしっかりと、その心と魂におさめて生きるのです。そして、それを私達の後の子孫にも残して、その回顧と共に明日を主と共に生きることを伝えていくのです。お祈りしましょう。

Deuteronomy: Do We Have a Story To Pass On To The Children?

 From the "Five Books of Moses", so far we have looked at Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. And today, we will take a look at the last of these books, which is Deuteronomy.

 From the first four books, we can see that there is a process in the journey of the people of Israel. The promise God made to Abraham, his descendants' time as slaves in Egypt, their escape to the desert where they received the law, the building of the tabernacle, the detailed laws given to the people of Israel which set them apart from the other nations as God's holy people; these were things they had to go through, and each of these events were all part of a process within God's plan, who works behind all the events that occur in the history of mankind.

 The book of Deuteronomy serves as a bridge for the people of Israel as they are moving on to the next stage. After escaping from Egypt and their forty years in the desert were coming to a close, they were about to journey into the Land of Canaan and settle there, and Deuteronomy is a record of the words Moses spoke to the people of Israel before this great change. In today's message, we will focus on what Moses said to his people.

 For us to have a clear idea about the book of Deuteronomy, and not only that but also the whole of Scriptures, let me first explain to you about a certain place which will be the key to our understanding. This place is the Land of Canaan, which, as I mentioned, was the land that the people of Israel were about to cross into. The Bible refers to this place as the "Promised Land" and calls it the "Land of Milk and Honey". Today, this is the region surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Jordan River, and the Dead Sea.

 When looking at a map of this region, it is quite evident how small this place is, probably the same size as the piece of land many farmers in Brazil or Australia may own. But this is also the place where the conflict between Israel and Palestine is still happening today as the nations of the world looks on. Why is this place so important? The answer is written in Genesis chapter 12.

 1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.

2 "I will make you into a great nation,

   and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

   and you will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you,

   and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

   will be blessed through you."

 4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

 6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

 The Land of Canaan is the land that God promised to give to Abraham, the ancestor of the people of Israel. When they were still enslaved in Egypt, God spoke to Moses also about this Promised Land, as it is written in Exodus 3:7-8.

 7 The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

 After hearing these words, Moses realized that his life mission is to rescue his people from Egypt and lead them into Canaan, the land of Milk and Honey. We learned last week from the book of Numbers that this land was also the destination of the twelve men sent by Moses.

 For most of us, when we hear the word "land" we think of a piece of land where a new shopping center will be built, or a place that has been acquired for the construction of a new apartment complex. But for the descendants of Abraham and those whose ancestors lives are recorded in the Bible, the problems they face today for this land is not something that just popped up recently, but instead the root of these problems goes all the way back to the Old Testament. Not only that, but this land is the land that was promised to them by God. And for this reason, the conflict going on in that region is still a major topic in today's current events.

 As I mentioned in last week's sermon, the men who were sent to explore this land and the people who heard their report were unfaithful and this caused the people of Israel to wander in the desert for forty years, and apart from Joshua, Caleb, and the younger generation, the people of Israel and even Moses himself were unable to enter into the land of Canaan for their lack of faith. Therefore, the book of Deuteronomy ends with God showing Moses the land of Canaan from the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. He saw the land, but died without ever crossing over into it.

 We are all made humble when we are faced with this kind of reality. The people of Israel and even the great leader Moses were not allowed to enter into the promised land for their unfaithfulness. We must all take this truth to heart. We can assume that for Moses, this fact was especially hard to accept, because he and his people spent most of their life trying to reach that Promised Land.

 But we see that somewhere along the way, he was able to accept this. And he put all his efforts into fulfilling his duty to God until his death. What was it that he did in his final days? Apart from Caleb and Joshua, the younger generation did not experience the escape from Egypt or the forty years in the desert, and so Moses spoke to them about their relationship with the LORD, reflected on the past, and at the same time gave them rules and advice to follow as they prepared to enter into a new life in the land of Canaan, and the words he spoke to them around this time are recorded in the book of Deuteronomy.

 What did Moses say to his people in such a significant period of transition? Let us read from Deuteronomy 6:20-24.

 20 In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?" 21 tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 Before our eyes the LORD sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24 The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness."

 What Moses wanted to tell his people the most was how he and his ancestors walked with the LORD, how God worked behind everything his people went through, in other words recollecting "His Story". And, as you may already know, each time we gather to worship or to read and study the Bible, we too are hearing about how God works in the lives of people and reflect upon His Story.

 You can find many accessories for a car. Some of the options may be a DVD player or a GPS navigation system. The reason I say "options" is because these things are optional and are not required for a car to function properly. We have yet to see a car on sale with a limited time offer for a set of four tires, or an optional steering wheel. That is because without these you cannot drive a car. And although a car may still move without them, there aren't any dealers who give you an special offer for side and rear view mirrors.

Imagine driving on a six-lane freeway without rear or side view mirrors. It would surely be quite a thrilling experience. Without using these mirrors to look back on the path we have crossed, it is very difficult for us to keep moving forward. In the same way, by knowing what the LORD had done for them and their ancestors in the past, the people of Israel were able to move forward.

 For this reason, in Deuteronomy, Moses tells them not to forget their people's escape from Egypt and says this eighteen times, and we also see his successor Joshua recounting what the LORD had done for the people of Israel in his last speech addressing his people (Joshua 24), and Ezra's speech after their return from Babylon (Nehemiah 9) and Stephen's plea before his martyrdom (Acts 7) are all recounting the journey of the Israelites and what God had done for them. The people of Israel reflected on their past and in this way empowered themselves for the future that awaited them.

 And this has not changed to this day. Today, in places such as the Wailing Wall, we can find a Jewish person following a certain kind of tradition. They wear a thing called a tefillin on their head and have a black strap wrapped around their hand and arm. They do this to remember how God led their ancestors out of Egypt and they follow word by word what the following passage says in Exodus:

 8 On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.' 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. 10 You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.

 When we see these people doing this we might think to ourselves, "why take it so far?". But for them, what God did for their ancestors must never be forgotten, and as the nation of Israel still face many difficulties today, they must reflect upon their history in order to look into the future.

 Today, even non-Christian scholars say that the sadness of modern man is caused by the absence of a significant story to pass on. I wish all of you could know how thankful I felt as I was preparing this message. Although I am not Jewish, as a child of God, I have the great privilege of being able to inherit the story of God and the people of Israel, receive guidance from this as I face the days ahead of me, and pass this great story on with confidence to the succeeding generations. And this privilege is not only for me but is given to each and every one of you.

 In Deuteronomy 11:18-28 it is written:

 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

22 If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him— 23 then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you. 24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea. 25 No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God, as he promised you, will put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.

26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse— 27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known.

 Following the events in Deuteronomy, the people of Israel lived side by side with the words and instructions that were given to them. Deuteronomy is also the book that Jesus Christ cited from the most, and Jesus Himself followed the words written in this book. Indeed, the book of Deuteronomy became the guideline that the people of Israel based their life upon. But in spite of this, they repeatedly chose the curse instead of choosing the blessing that was set before them, and as a result had to face many hardships. And as we know today, they led their own nation into destruction and the people were separated scattered across the world.

 But God is abundant in His faithfulness and mercy. He once again granted His people a nation which is today's Israel. Yet to this day, they are still being threatened by the nations surrounding them. The chaotic situation going on today in countries like Iran, Egypt, and Syria have the power to directly impact this small nation of Israel. They are indeed being surrounded by enemies from all sides. But even in this kind of situation, they still rely on the words written in Deuteronomy.

 "I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse"(Deuteronomy 11:26); these words, spoken by God, make us imagine that there are two cups set before us. We are given the freedom of choosing which cup to drink from. When we get lost and cannot decide which cup to choose, we can look back on the things that the LORD had done for the people of Israel. Even though we may be Gentiles to them, we can learn from the history of the people of Israel and engrave in our hearts the story that God left for all humanity through them. And let us pass this story on to the children, let us teach them to remember this story as they walk together with the Lord toward their future. Let us pray.
